There seems to be something wrong with the current design which leaves the first coffee smelling of rubber to me every time (cheap hoses used, maybe?), plus the range of discs are pretty limited even mail-order, plus you can't use capsules, plus there's a lot of plastic in them and their UK recycling scheme is an annoying sham with collection points listed that no longer exist and whole swathes of the country with no points. If you really want an instant machine, probably go for Saeco-style (ESE - compostable) or at least a Nespresso-compatible "coffee squash" machine (which doesn't smell odd and seems to have a working recycling system).

Moved here from Alberta and the same deal would usually come out to around $6 which is expensive already. I just moved to Ontario and went to grab a snack on the way to work today and couldn't believe it.

The Baratza Vario is imho the best value grinder for grind quality IF you have a screwdriver, some courage, and a few hours

Posting because I see a lot of folks asking about grinders, and a lot of people spending or saving to spend $600 for an NZ or waiting for one or something more expensive, but you can get a good ol Vario for $300 refurbished with the ceramic burrs (steels are better for brew I think)
A while back I posted on r/espresso after doing a DIY "hyperalignment" procedure as laid out on Home-barista forums (link to detailed reddit post) - with no extra parts, just a screwdriver and some dry erase marker to test the alignment of the burrs after the procedure (and the bonus flapper mod for single dosing), and one month later...I am convinced, the Vario is hands down the best grinder under $1k purely for grind quality and consistency.
Folks on the HB thread were comparing a hyperaligned vario to the EK43, monolith, I havent done those comparisons and was honestly a bit skeptical. But I've had the same coffees from my local shops EK, and another shops Mazzer SJ, and at home on my Vario, and I cant taste the difference when I follow their recipe at home with a measly GCP (OPV mod and IMS basket). I've been running a playlist of coffees - everything from light to medium roast natural or washed, every bean now offers an avalanche of flavors and I can really explore them across recipes. The aligned Vario has:
- 0.1g or less of retention/exchange
- single doses like a champ (with the stock hopper, although I have 2x the fancy Forte hoppers)
- Super easy to switch coffees with minimum waste because its stepped and 230 possible steps means I have all the range I'll ever need, I use maybe 2-4g of grind to adjust to a new grind (e.g., switching to decaf in late afternoon)
- 1 month later, burrs are still in perfect alignment, and the grinds are so fluffy I need to do RDT and have a funnel to control static (from HB forums its designed to stay in alignment indefinitely but remains to be seen for me, so far so good)
- I don't think I'll ever be selling mine, as long as Baratza keeps their awesome customer service!

Can anyone recommend some decent organic wholebean coffee that doesn't break the bank? Preferably available with free shipping in the UK? I'm not a huge coffee snob, but prefer to drink organic coffee for health and environmental reasons - besides, more often than not organic coffee is grown with care and tends to taste good, at least to me anyway
Trouble is its mostly far more expensive than conventional coffee and I'm ideally looking to spend around £10 / kilo but everything seems to be quite a lot more than that .. any tips as to where to look? Thanks!!

So if it’s that big of a thing, you might be able to talk to your better local roasters about where their green is sourced. You may find non-labeled options that are perfect.
